The word ‘aromatherapy’ was first used in the 1920s by French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefossé, following a lucky accident in his laboratory. Gattefossé set his arm on fire during one of his experiments and in a panic, dipped the burn into the nearest available cool liquid – in this case, lavender essential oil. He immediately noticed the oil’s cooling and soothing properties, striking a long-term interest in essential oils in medicinal treatments. Lavender today is used in a multitude of natural health products and cosmetics and is one of the most popular essential oils in the practice of aromatherapy. Lavender essential oil’s soothing properties will help calm anxiety, improve relaxation, and help promote a good night’s sleep. Used on the skin, Lavender is effective for soothing minor cuts and grazes and can also provide nourishment to dry or sun-chapped skin.
